“The ecology part fit in with our Science curriculum well. We had just completed an ecosystem unit. The day was a good introduction into watersheds that we will discuss later in the year. I would definitely consider this trip again next fall.”

– Patricia Kiernan St. Ambrose Catholic School

Nature makes an excellent classroom; it provides built-in involvement. It is a place full of wonders, all the more amazing to students for whom their school field trip may be the first introduction to the dazzling world around them. As outdoor educators, The EDGE staff have the great fortune to teach where everything is alive.

Rachel Carson in A Sense of Wonder offers, “If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow . . . . Once the emotions have been aroused — a sense of the beautiful, the excitement of the new and the unknown, a feeling of sympathy, pity, admiration or love — then we wish for knowledge about the subject of our emotional response. Once found, it has lasting meaning.”
